International Tour Divina Commedia 2.0 – Inferno
An immersive experience of contemporary music and visual art
How would Hell be envisioned if it were born of today’s world? And what sins would shape its circles?
In an age of relentless consumption, obsession with appearances, technological alienation, and the cynical abuse of power, the International Tour Divina Commedia 2.0 – Inferno (www.divinacommedia.ro) reimagines Dante’s vision through the eyes — and ears — of the 21st century.
The ambitious project unites 20 artists — 9 composers and 9 visual creators — together with Duo HESPERUS (Costin Soare and Ioan Bănescu) in a collaborative venture unlike anything else on Romania’s cultural stage. Nine newly commissioned works — the first ever in Romania written for guitar duo and electronic tape — are brought to life in a multimedia performance where music and moving image merge into a bold, immersive experience.
Each circle of Hell is reinterpreted as a musical composition paired with an original visual piece — from animation and experimental film to hybrid art forms. Dante’s age-old sins — lust, greed, wrath, violence — find their echoes in the vices of our own time: overconsumption, sensory overload, visual saturation, information manipulation, and digital alienation.
The composers — Dan Dediu, Violeta Dinescu, Gabriel Mălăncioiu, Cristian Lolea, Diana Rotaru, Dan Variu, Sebastian Androne-Nakanishi, Andrei Petrache and George Păiș — cover a broad spectrum of generations and aesthetics, each offering a unique voice within this sonic labyrinth. Their music is paired with striking visuals by Vlad Basarab, Alexandru Maxim, Daniel Munteanu, Nichita Stamate, Eugen Dediu, Anita Frâncu, Roxana Bărbulescu, Alexandra Duţă and Ana Vârdol, each bringing a distinct perspective to the theme.
The tour will be staged in leading venues for contemporary music and visual arts across Romania and Europe, offering not only a rich artistic experience but also a meditation on how sin evolves, disguises itself, and thrives in the excesses, vanities, and depersonalization of the modern world. This is a vision of Hell for our time — where the guitar, once called a “miniature orchestra” by Berlioz, gains new depth and force through the resonance of electronic sound.
